What are chemical peels?

Medical grade skin peels are a professional exfoliation treatment that removes dead, keratinised epidermal cells to reveal fresher, more radiant skin underneath. By promoting cellular turnover and collagen regeneration, a chemical peel smoothes wrinkles, refines pores, and restores firmness. Whether you need a light face peel to boost luminosity or a deeper skin peel for stubborn pigmentation, our protocols are tailored to your unique skin goals. I use superficial and medium depth professional peels and Alumier MD professional peels and I customise the peel to address your specific concerns. In addition to the chemical peel treatment I may use targeted serums following the peel or within a skin care routine to address your concerns.

Benefits of medical-grade skin peels

Chemical peels can be used to help:

  • Reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Reduce pigmentation and uneven tone
  • Treat acne
  • Treat acne scarring
  • Treat rosacea

My goal with all chemical peels is to achieve a refreshed, rejuvenated, natural-looking result with minimal or no discomfort. I have extensive aesthetic and microsurgical experience with a very light touch. This is essential to minimise discomfort during injection and allows me to fine tune my treatments to the patient’s desired outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a chemical peel good for your skin?

Chemical peels are one of the easiest ways to refresh and rejuvenate tired or sun-damaged skin. By applying acids such as glycolic, salicylic, or lactic acid, dead cells are gently dissolved, revealing smoother texture, more even tone, and a natural glow. Regular peels can help fade fine lines, clear up mild acne, and reduce pigmentation.

How long will a chemical peel last?

The duration of results varies by peel depth:

  • Superficial peels often show smoother skin for 1–2 months.
  • Medium peels can maintain improvements for 3–6 months.
  • Deep peels may last 1–3 years and sometimes longer.

Consistent sun protection and a tailored skincare routine will extend your results.

How many layers of skin does a chemical peel remove?

The depth of a peel determines which skin layers are targeted:

  • Light (superficial) peels remove part of the epidermis (outermost layer).
  • Medium peels penetrate into the upper papillary dermis.
  • Deep peels reach the mid-to-lower reticular dermis, giving dramatic renewal but requiring longer recovery.

Do chemical peels clear blackheads?

Yes, especially peels containing salicylic acid (a BHA). Salicylic acid penetrates oil-filled pores, dissolves debris, and exfoliates from within, helping to both remove existing blackheads and prevent new ones from forming.

Can I wear makeup after a chemical peel?

Wait at least 48–72 hours before applying mineral-based makeup. Light peels usually allow makeup sooner, but medium or deep peels require you to stay clear until visible peeling subsides. Always follow your practitioner’s guidance to avoid irritation or infection.

Are chemical peels painful?

Most people feel a mild tingling or warming sensation during a light to medium peel. Redness and slight stinging can persist for a few hours. Deep peels often require topical or local anesthesia to ensure comfort throughout the procedure.

Is one session of chemical peel enough?

A single treatment can brighten skin and smooth minor texture issues, but optimal results typically need a series:

  1. Superficial peels: 4–6 sessions spaced 2–4 weeks apart.
  2. Medium peels: 1–3 sessions for visible improvement.
  3. Deep peels: Often completed in one session, with dramatic, long-lasting renewal.

Do chemical peels lift your face?

While chemical peels don’t physically lift sagging tissue like surgery, they do stimulate collagen and elastin over time. This renewed fiber network can create a subtle tightening effect, improving firmness and contour.

Should I get a chemical peel or microneedling?

Opt for a chemical peel if you’re targeting hyperpigmentation, sun spots, rough texture, or mild acne. Choose microneedling for deeper acne scars, stretch marks, or large pores.

A skincare professional can assess your skin type, concerns, and downtime tolerance to recommend the best option.

Do and don’ts after chemical peel?

Do:

  • Use a gentle, hydrating cleanser twice daily
  • Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ every morning
  • Keep skin moisturised with a fragrance-free cream
  • Drink plenty of water to support healing
  • Follow any prescribed serums or ointments

Don’t:

  • Pick, rub, or peel flaking skin
  • Skip your sunblock or stay in direct sunlight
  • Use active ingredients like retinol or strong AHAs/BHAs
  • Take hot baths, saunas, or vigorous exercise for 48 hours
  • Wear heavy makeup until fully healed
