What are skin boosters?

Skin boosters are injectable hyaluronic acid treatments that are injected directly into the dermis of the skin. There are many hyaluronic acid-based skin boosters available with different properties to address different concerns, for example, Profhilo, Teosyal and Juvederm Volite.

Unlike traditional dermal fillers, skin boosters:

  • Disperse evenly beneath the skin
  • Deeply hydrate and plump tissue
  • Stimulate collagen and elastin production
  • Smooth fine lines, wrinkles and crepey texture

They can be used to give overall skin rejuvenation or more targeted treatment of perioral lines, smile lines or neck lines and wrinkles. Skin booster treatments will vary in frequency depending on your concern and on the physical properties of that skin booster. This will all be discussed during your consultation with Dr Bye prior to any treatments being performed.

Skin boosters treatment areas

  • Face: Cheeks, forehead, jawline, nasolabial folds
  • Neck & Décolletage: Crepey or sagging skin rejuvenation
  • Hands & Arms: Hydration and smoothing of age spots or laxity
  • Body: Targeted lift for loose skin on tummy, thighs or upper arms

My goal with every skin booster treatment is to achieve a refreshed, rejuvenated, natural-looking result with minimal or no discomfort. I have extensive aesthetic and microsurgical experience with a very light touch. This is essential to minimise discomfort during injection and allows me to fine tune my treatments to the patient’s desired outcomes. I am a qualified GP and aesthetic doctor (Level 7 Diploma Aesthetics). I have undergone extensive cosmetic dermatology and aesthetic training at Harley Academy. I specialise in treatments such as anti-wrinkle injections, chemical peels, microneedling and polynucleotides.

In addition, as a GP my holistic approach to my cosmetic work allows me to explore your medical history and any concerns you may have or have previously had with regards to past treatments elsewhere. My patients often describe me as calm and reassuring. I will always discuss budget prior to treatment and will be open and honest about how to achieve the best results according to your budget too.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a skin booster do?

Skin boosters are micro-injections of hyaluronic acid that flood the dermis with deep hydration. By drawing in water and stimulating collagen and elastin, they smooth fine lines, improve elasticity, refine texture, and impart a healthy glow without altering your facial contours.

Is skin booster better than filler?

They serve different goals:

  • Skin boosters enhance overall skin quality—hydration, firmness, luminosity.
  • Dermal fillers restore volume and sculpt specific areas.

If you want a radiant, dewy complexion, choose a skin booster. If you need shape or volume correction, go with a filler.

How long do skin booster injections last?

Results typically persist for 3–6 months. Lightweight hyaluronic acid gels gradually biodegrade as they release moisture and drive collagen production. Maintenance sessions every 4–6 months help sustain hydration and skin-quality benefits.

What are the disadvantages of skin boosters?

  • Mild bruising, redness or swelling at injection sites
  • Temporary “bumps” or tenderness that settle within 24–48 hours

What age should you get skin boosters?

You can start in your mid-20s when early dehydration or hormonal shifts first affect skin glow. Many patients in their 30s–50s use boosters to combat fine lines, uneven tone and loss of firmness. There is no strict upper age limit—suitable for any adult with skin-quality concerns.

Do skin boosters tighten skin?

Yes. By kick-starting collagen and elastin synthesis, skin boosters improve skin firmness and resilience. While they won’t lift sagging tissue like microneedling, you’ll notice a subtle tightening effect as hydration and structural proteins rebound.

Is microneedling or skin boosters better?

  • Microneedling creates micro-injuries to boost collagen, ideal for scars, pore size and texture.
  • Skin boosters directly infuse HA and actives to hydrate, plump and brighten.

The best choice depends on whether you seek collagen induction (microneedling) or moisture-driven glow (boosters). Many clinicians combine both (“poly-needling”) for enhanced results.

What not to do after a skin booster?

  • Don’t touch or massage injection sites for at least 6 hours
  • Avoid heavy makeup for 12–24 hours
  • Skip vigorous exercise, saunas and sunbeds for 24–48 hours
  • Don’t consume alcohol or take blood thinners (e.g., aspirin) for 24 hours
  • Avoid extreme heat/cold, peels or strong skin care until redness/swelling subsides

Where do they inject skin boosters?

Practitioners inject skin boosters into the dermis in strategic zones, depending on your needs or concerns:

  • Cheeks and malar area for overall glow
  • Nasolabial folds and marionette lines to soften creases
  • Under-eye hollows to reduce shadowing
  • Neck, décolletage, hands or body areas that need renewed hydration

Can skin boosters make your face puffy?

Initial swelling is common due to hyaluronic acid’s water-binding action. This transient puffiness peaks in 2–4 hours and resolves within 24–48 hours. True long-term “puffiness” rarely occurs when treatments are performed by skilled injectors using conservative volumes.

Who is not suitable for skin boosters?

Avoid skin boosters if you have:

  • Active infection, inflammation or open lesions at the treatment site
  • Known allergy to hyaluronic acid or any injectable ingredients
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Severe autoimmune or bleeding disorder

A thorough medical history and skin assessment will confirm your suitability.

Is a skin booster painful?

Most patients describe only mild discomfort—a quick pinch or sting. Many products include lidocaine, and topical anaesthetic cream can be applied for extra comfort. Any soreness or tenderness usually subsides within a few hours.

Are skin boosters good for mature skin?

Absolutely. Mature skin benefits from hyaluronic acid’s moisture-retention and collagen-stimulating effects. Boosters smooth fine lines, firm crepey texture and restore a youthful radiance—making them an excellent choice for skin aged 40 and up.

Do skin boosters plump your face?

They subtly plump your skin by hydrating the dermis, but they don’t add structural volume like dermal fillers. You’ll notice a soft, dewy fullness rather than dramatic contour changes—perfect for a natural, refreshed look.
