Why choose lip enhancement fillers?

Lip enhancement using dermal fillers acts to replace lost volume due to the reduction of our own naturally occurring hyaluronic acid which occurs during the ageing process or to correct asymmetry.

This creates a fuller, hydrated and smoother appearance to the lips and makes you feel more confident in your smile.

What are lip dermal fillers?

At Optimise Aesthetics, the dermal fillers we use are FDA-approved, reversible hyaluronic acid gels, which are injected into targeted areas for subtle but impactful results.

Just like the hyaluronic acid that your body naturally produces, synthetic hyaluronic acid fillers degrade slowly over time and are naturally broken down by enzymes in the dermis layer of your skin.

Benefits of lip dermal fillers include:

  • Plumping and volumising of the lips
  • Definition of the vermilion border and improved lip symmetry
  • Deep hydration, as hyaluronic acid attracts water molecules
  • Gradual, natural breakdown over 6-18 months
  • Built-in local anaesthetic for added comfort

How do hyaluronic acid fillers work?

Dermal fillers consist of a synthetic hyaluronic acid gel. When injected into different layers of the face it can be used to reduce the appearance of sagging or loosening of the skin, folds, lines, wrinkles and to reshape areas of the face that have lost volume due to ageing.

It has the added benefit of being very hydrating, as it attracts water molecules. This allows for a plumping and firming effect and gives a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance.

Dermal filler injections are administered by using a needle or a cannula technique. Dermal fillers contain local anaesthetic within them which helps minimise discomfort during the procedure. Depending on the area treated you may also need to have topical local anaesthetic cream applied prior to treatment to minimise discomfort.

Results are visible immediately and last between three to six months depending on the filler used.

Why choose Optimise Aesthetics for your lip fillers?

My goal with all dermal fillers for lip enhancement is to achieve a refreshed, rejuvenated, natural-looking result with minimal or no discomfort. I have extensive aesthetic and microsurgical experience with a very light touch. This is essential to minimise discomfort during injection and allows me to fine tune my treatments to the patient’s desired outcomes.

I am a qualified GP and aesthetic doctor (Level 7 Diploma Aesthetics). I have undergone extensive cosmetic dermatology and aesthetic training at Harley Academy. I specialise in treatments such as anti-wrinkle injections, profhilo, microneedling and polynucleotides.

in addition, as a GP my holistic approach to my cosmetic work allows me to explore your medical history and any concerns you may have or have previously had with regards to past treatments elsewhere. My patients often describe me as calm and reassuring.

I will always discuss budget prior to treatment and will be open and honest about how to achieve the best results according to your budget too.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do lip fillers last?

Most hyaluronic acid–based lip fillers deliver visible results for 3–6 months. Individual factors such as metabolism, lifestyle, and treatment frequency also influence longevity.

What is the downside of lip fillers?

Common drawbacks include temporary bruising, swelling, redness, and tenderness at injection sites. Less frequently, patients may experience lumps or allergic reactions. Over-injection or superficial placement can lead to “pillow face” syndrome. Rare but serious risks—such as vascular occlusion, infection, or tissue necrosis—means that it is very important to choose a qualified injector and FDA-approved products.

Do and don’ts after lip fillers?

Following proper aftercare helps minimise side effects and ensures optimal results.

  • Do ice your lips gently to reduce swelling.
  • Do keep your head elevated while sleeping for the first 24 hours.
  • Do use a gentle, fragrance-free lip balm to moisturise.
  • Do avoid strenuous exercise and alcohol for 24–48 hours after treatment.
  • Do avoid applying lip makeup for at least 12–24 hours to prevent infection.
  • Don’t touch, press, or massage your lips unnecessarily in the first two days.
  • Don’t use straws or make excessive puckering motions for 48 hours.
  • Don’t have dental work or facial treatments around the mouth for two weeks post-filler.

Can you feel lip fillers when kissing?

During the first week, mild swelling and firmness may alter lip sensation. However, once the filler integrates into the tissue—typically within 7–10 days—kissing feels natural. Proper deep placement along the vermilion border prevents any noticeable change in texture or firmness.

Who shouldn’t get lip fillers?

Lip fillers are not recommended for individuals with:

  • Active infections or cold sores around the mouth
  • Known allergies to hyaluronic acid or lidocaine
  • Bleeding disorders or use of anticoagulant medications
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding

Always undergo a thorough consultation with an experienced provider before treatment.

How painful are lip fillers?

Most patients report only mild discomfort—a brief pinch or pressure—during lip injections. Topical numbing creams and fillers pre-mixed with lidocaine significantly reduce pain. Post-procedure tenderness usually peaks within 24–48 hours and resolves quickly.

Can I smile after lip fillers?

Yes. You can smile immediately after treatment, though exaggerated facial expressions are best avoided for the first 24–48 hours to prevent filler displacement. By days 3–5, swelling has subsided enough to allow natural smiling without discomfort.

What is a pillow face?

“Pillow face” refers to an overfilled, puffy appearance caused by excessive or superficial filler placement. It often results in rounded, unnatural contours. Prevention relies on deep, structural placement of filler near the bone. If needed, misplaced hyaluronic acid can be dissolved safely with hyaluronidase enzymatic injections

How long do lip fillers take?

A typical lip filler appointment lasts 30–45 minutes. This includes consultation, numbing (5–15 minutes), and the injection itself (5–10 minutes). Most patients are in and out within an hour, making it a convenient lunchtime treatment.

Can I eat after lip fillers?

Yes. Opt for soft, cool foods like yogurt, smoothies, mashed potatoes, and soups (cooled to a warm temperature) to minimise pressure on the lips. Avoid hot, spicy, salty, or crunchy foods, straws, alcohol, and smoking for 24–48 hours to reduce swelling and bruising.
