What are nasolabial folds?

Nasolabial folds are lines running from the nose to the mouth and are produced mostly when smiling and talking. As we age, we lose volume in the mid-face and cheek area, which is how these nasolabial fold lines start to appear or become more pronounced. Dermal fillers are used to treat nasolabial folds. Injection is either administered into the cheek area which acts to create volume in the mid face and soften the fold and or directly into the fold itself to soften its appearance.
Results are visible immediately and last between three to twelve months depending on the filler used.

What are dermal fillers for nasolabial folds?

Polynucleotides are advanced biostimulators derived from DNA fragments that work beneath the skin’s surface.  Unlike traditional fillers, polynucleotides don’t add volume – they kickstart your skin’s own repair mechanisms by stimulating collagen production, boosting fibroblast activity, improving elasticity and reducing inflammation.

Polynucleotides can soften the appearance of nasolabial and can be used alone or in combination with dermal fillers to reduce their appearance.  If you have dermal fillers for your nasolabial folds, polynucleotides can act to reduce the frequency and volume of filler use and promote a lovely glow to the skin.

The results are not instant but improvement can be noted from about three weeks and continues to improve over a twelve-week period.

How do hyaluronic acid fillers work?

Dermal fillers consist of a synthetic hyaluronic acid gel. When injected into different layers of the face it can be used to reduce the appearance of sagging or loosening of the skin, folds, lines, wrinkles and to reshape areas of the face that have lost volume due to ageing. It has the added benefit of being very hydrating, as it attracts water molecules. This allows for a plumping and firming effect and gives a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance.

Dermal filler injections are administered by using a needle or a cannula technique. Dermal fillers contain local anaesthetic within them which helps minimise discomfort during the procedure. Depending on the area treated you may also need to have topical local anaesthetic cream applied prior to treatment to minimise discomfort.

Why choose Optimise Aesthetics for your nasolabial folds filler?

My goal with all dermal fillers for nasolabial folds is to achieve a refreshed, rejuvenated, natural-looking result with minimal or no discomfort. I have extensive aesthetic and microsurgical experience with a very light touch. This is essential to minimise discomfort during injection and allows me to fine tune my treatments to the patient’s desired outcomes. I am a qualified GP and aesthetic doctor (Level 7 Diploma Aesthetics). I have undergone extensive cosmetic dermatology and aesthetic training at Harley Academy. I specialise in treatments such as anti-wrinkle injections, profhilo, microneedling and polynucleotides.

In addition, as a GP my holistic approach to my cosmetic work allows me to explore your medical history and any concerns you may have or have previously had with regards to past treatments elsewhere. My patients often describe me as calm and reassuring. I will always discuss budget prior to treatment and will be open and honest about how to achieve the best results according to your budget too.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best treatment for deep nasolabial folds?

This really depends on the cause of your nasolabial folds.  Every patient varies.  Following a consultation, we can advise what will be most effective for you.  A combination approach is often used including dermal fillers to the cheeks and/or nasolabial folds directly  and polynucleotides.

Can polynucleotides help with nasolabial folds?

Polynucleotides can help with nasolabial folds by increasing collagen and elastin production in the dermis and therefore softening the appearance of the lines.

How many sessions of polynucleotides do you need?

Usually two to three sessions are required each spaced 3 weeks apart.

Will my nasolabial folds go away?

Your nasolabial folds will reduce in appearance but will not fully disappear.  We are all meant to have a nasolabial fold and completely removing the fold can look very unnatural.

Does sleeping on your side cause nasolabial folds?

Nasolabial folds are normally caused by ageing changes to the facial bones, a change in position of the underlying fat pads and loss of collagen in the dermis.  Sleeping on one side can lead to more prominent facial lines on that side.

How long do fillers last in nasolabial folds?

Results typically persist for 3–12 months, depending on the type of filler, injection depth, and your metabolism.

Can nasolabial fold fillers go wrong?

Yes. Risks include overfilling (creating heavy or “bulldog” contours), asymmetry, lumps or nodules, and rare vascular occlusion if injected too superficially or without proper anatomy knowledge. Choosing an experienced injector and using cannula techniques helps minimise these complications.

How painful is nasolabial filler?

Discomfort is generally mild—a quick pinch or pressure rated around 2–4 out of 10. Topical numbing cream and fillers pre-mixed with lidocaine keep pain to a minimum. Most patients find nasolabial injections far more tolerable than deeper facial treatments.

Why are my nasolabial folds getting deeper?

Nasolabial folds deepen with age due to collagen and elastin loss, downward fat migration, bone resorption in the mid-face, and repeated muscle movements from smiling or talking. Environmental factors like UV exposure and smoking accelerate these structural changes.

What not to do after nasolabial fold filler?

Avoid for 24–48 hours:

  • Touching, massaging or pressing the treated area
  • Strenuous exercise, hot baths, saunas or sunbeds
  • Alcohol and blood-thinning medications (unless prescribed)
  • Heavy make-up or facials that may irritate injection sites.

Does nasolabial filler change your smile?

Properly placed filler adds mid-face support and can even improve lip eversion, giving a subtle lift at rest without impeding smile muscle function. Any temporary tightness from mild swelling typically resolves within days, preserving natural expressions.

Can nasolabial fold fillers migrate?

Migration can occur if filler isn’t anchored correctly or if too much pressure is applied soon after treatment. While more common in lips and tear troughs, migrated gel has been reported in nasolabial areas. Always see a professional with extensive experience in dermal fillers to ensure proper technique and product selection in order to minimise these risks

Does nasolabial filler look natural?

When administered by a skilled injector using appropriate products and volumes, nasolabial filler blends seamlessly with facial anatomy. Results appear soft and rejuvenated rather than “overdone,” with 3–12 months of subtle wrinkle smoothing and contour improvement.

At what age do nasolabial folds become prominent?

Nasolabial creases can begin as fine lines in the late 20s or 30s, especially with sun exposure or smoking. By the age of 40, they often deepen noticeably as collagen production slows, fat pads descend and bone density decreases.

What Our Clients Have to Say

I have had fillers in my nasolabial folds, my marionette lines and more recently, I have had fillers in my mid cheek area following weight loss on Mounjaro. The results have been absolutely amazing and really transformative.
